Supportive offers and supports successful volunteer transport schemes in County Durham and the North East of England because we have an amazing group of volunteer drivers. Some volunteer for a few hours per week, others a few days a week but every one of them plays a crucial part in helping the people of our communities. Volunteering with Supportive provides flexible working schedule that allows you pick and choose journeys, we offer a range of transport opportunities from transporting adults with learning disabilities to centres across county Durham, children to school and contact and finally transporting people to and from hospital appointments across County Durham and North East of England.
As a Volunteer driver you will be transporting individuals to and from appointments, contact and community centres. The role is very flexible and how much you work and for how long is entirely up to you, we will always contact you before to each scheduled journey to see whether or not you're available. As a Volunteer driver, you will be expected to safely transport individuals from their home addresses and transport them to their required destination. Supportive will covers the milage expenses from when you leave your house to when you finally arrive back home. Supportive will offer full training and offers support throughout the day and on an evening through our out of hours on call system meaning support and guidance is always there for you.
- Valid UK driving licence
- Clear DBS with NO convictions or cautions (Supportive will cover the cost)
- Good communication Skills
The role covers the whole of County Durham however, we offer additional journeys across the country. The role is flexible in the hours that someone is able to work however, usually our operating hours are 08:30 - 17:00 Mon - Fri (occasionally weekends if needed)
Supportive will provide full training prior to any journeys covering all aspects of lone working to transport. Supportive will provide the volunteer with a brand new phone that is used for journeys and full training on our new transport system all accessible by a touch of the phone.
Supportive will pay the volunteer driver 0.45p a mile which is paid weekly to the volunteer driver.
Supportive offers all that volunteer with us access to our award scheme, enabling our volunteers access to a Blue Light Card, expenses (tea's, coffee's etc) and a annual one off payment for their cars MOT. Supportive also has a 'refer a friend' scheme that enables already existing volunteers to receive £50 if they refer a friend that comes on board with us. Supportive also has monthly 'chat and chill' sessions where every volunteer is welcome to attend and we will provide tea's, coffee's, cakes and food. It goes without saying however, you don't have to wait for the 'Chat and Chill' each month, the door is always open and we encourage our volunteers to come and have a chat and a cuppa with our transport team.

The Volunteer will at all times:
• Understand the principles of confidentiality and handle all information appropriately
• Submit mileage claim forms on a weekly basis
• Inform Supportive of any change in address or telephone number
• Abide by the Volunteer Drivers’ Handbook as amended from time to time
• Abide by all Supportive policies which are applicable to the role of a volunteer, including, but not limited to Health and Safety, Safeguarding, Data Protection and Confidentiality
• Ensure all documentation supplied to Supportive is correct and up-to-date
• Regularly maintain vehicle to ensure safety of passengers and themselves and be aware that Supportive will undertake spot checks on the vehicle from time to time
• Be aware of Supportive’s procedures in relation to accidents, incidents or concerns
• Inform Supportive immediately of any medical condition or disability that may affect their ability to drive safely
• Have a minimum of one year’s post-test experience and produce their driver’s licence every 6 months
• Refrain from doing anything which may constitute an unacceptable health and safety risk to themselves and others
• Report any defective equipment, unsafe situations or practices immediately to the Head of Service
• Report any sanctions/endorsements on their licence to Supportive immediately
• Following induction, undertake a Disclosure and Barring Service enhanced check on a three yearly basis.
