Ushaw is home to a large and diverse collection of books, paintings, textiles and artifacts. During the nineteenth century, important objects were acquired for their aesthetic appeal or for their historical significance. Others were purchased or donated to Ushaw to be used as teaching aids.
Many of our important paintings and sculptures are on permanent display within the Main House and the Chapels. Ushaw’s Library contains over 50,000 books together with a wealth of archive material relating to our history, architectural design and alumni. Other objects, including textiles, when not on temporary display, are housed in secure store rooms.
No two days are ever the same at Ushaw Historic House Chapels and Gardens so you need to be prepared to get involved.
The ability to be visible, approachable, to engage and share information, and to assist visitors with their enquiries is a fundamental aspect of the role.
Our Collections Team work mainly with the books within the library or with the textiles. These historical items require specialist cleaning and full training is provided.
You will also be given the opportunity to participate in other volunteer opportunities and events as they arise at Ushaw.
