Friends of Durham Cathedral Fundraising Volunteer

Help by providing support to a range of fundraising activities and events on behalf of the Friends of Durham Cathedral.

The Friends of Durham Cathedral is an independent charity of over 3,000 international members who are committed to support a range of heritage and conservation projects at Durham Cathedral.

Responsibilities

• Assisting in the delivery of fundraising and raising awareness of membership and support of the Friends of Durham Cathedral, at the Friends Table and at events which have a fundraising focus.
• Engaging with visitors at the Friends Table, providing them with information to promote membership of the Friends and processing transactions for any merchandise they wish to buy.
• Carrying out basic stock checks and notifying the Friends office when more stock is required for the Friends Table.
• Assisting at fundraising events such as the Christmas Fayre.
• Being a positive ambassador for the Friends of Durham Cathedral, Durham Cathedral, Durham City, the Northeast of England and the UK.

Skills & Qualities

We welcome volunteers from any background, of all faiths and none, and those who in turn show respect and sensitivity towards all nationalities, religions, beliefs, cultures, backgrounds, and the mission, purpose and values of Durham Cathedral. Inspired by our saints, Cuthbert and Bede, the mission of Durham Cathedral is to offer everyone the opportunity to encounter God and know God’s love in Jesus Christ.

For this role, we are looking for the following:

• Volunteers aged 16 or above
• Friendly and personable, welcoming manner.
• Good numeracy and attention to detail.
• Confidence volunteering independently and as part of a team.
• Experience of cash handling/credit card processing would be helpful but full training is given.
• Membership of the Friends is helpful but not required.

When & Where?

You will usually be based at The Friends Table, located in the Nave of Durham Cathedral, The College, Durham City, DH1 3EH, or at other locations in or around Durham for any off-site events you choose to assist with.

We are grateful for any gift of time you can give. We fundraise throughout the year. The Friends Table or office-based tasks are usually undertaken within normal office hours (weekdays, daytime). Some of our fundraising and other special events take place on weekends or evenings.

Training and Support Offered/Expenses

• Introductory training specific to the role

We will also ask you to complete the Church of England Safeguarding Training to Foundations level and ACT Action Counters Terrorism training. This is mandatory for all Cathedral volunteers and further details of how to access the training will be provided once your application form has been accepted.

Unfortunately we are not able to offer expenses.

Some areas of the Cathedral are not fully accessible without the use of steps, and as a historic building, some floors are uneven. Please do let us know if mobility may be challenging for you in this environment.
