Digital and Telephone Advice Volunteer

Peterlee, Newton Aycliffe, Stanley

Help someone find their way forward

Every week, people across County Durham come to us because they're struggling with money, benefits, energy costs, housing or other problems.

You don't need to be an advice expert to help.

We'll train and support you to listen to people, understand their situation and help them find the information and support they need.

Volunteer for around 4 hours a week.

You can gain valuable skills, build your confidence and make a real difference to someone in your community.

Responsibilities

No two days will be the same! As a Volunteer Digital and Telephone Advisor, you’ll be:
• Listening carefully to clients and helping them share their situation
• Using our advice systems (with full support) to research information and options
• Explaining choices clearly so people can make informed decisions
• Recording cases accurately on our secure database
• Spotting common issues to help highlight challenges affecting local communities

Skills & Qualities

You don’t need any previous experience - we’ll give you all the training and support you need. We’re looking for someone who is:
• Friendly, approachable, and non-judgemental.
• A good listener who can gather information with patience and empathy.
• Confident with reading, writing, and basic maths
• Comfortable using IT for online research, case recording, and virtual learning.
• Aligned with our values on equality, diversity, and inclusion.

When & Where?

We ask for a commitment of 4 hours per weeks, but we’ll work with you to find a schedule that fits.
• We will invest in your development with training, mentoring, and real-life experience to build your confidence, skills, and future opportunities.
• Travel expenses will be reimbursed for agreed trips to your local office or training sessions.
