Help people understand their options and find a way forward.

Would you like to develop your knowledge and skills while making a real difference to people’s lives?

County Durham Advice & Guidance Service is looking for committed volunteers who want to help local people understand their options, access relevant support and make informed decisions about the issues affecting them.

People come to our service with a range of concerns, which may include money, benefits, housing, energy costs and other everyday challenges. As an Adviser Volunteer, you’ll develop the skills needed to understand clients’ circumstances, research information and provide appropriate advice and guidance.

You don’t necessarily need previous advice experience. We’ll discuss the role’s requirements and the training and support available to help you develop.

Responsibilities

With appropriate training and supervision, your responsibilities may include:
Listening to clients and gathering information to understand their circumstances.
Identifying the issues affecting each client and what support they may need.
Using relevant information sources and advice systems to research options.
Explaining information clearly so clients can understand their options and make informed decisions.
Helping clients identify appropriate next steps and access relevant services or support.
Recording client information accurately and following confidentiality and data protection procedures.
Recognising when an issue requires further guidance, specialist support or referral.
Keeping your knowledge up to date through training, supervision and ongoing learning.

You’ll work within the scope of your training and competence, following the service’s procedures and seeking support whenever necessary.

Skills & Qualities

You don’t need any previous experience - we’ll give you all the training and support you need. We’re looking for someone who is:
• Friendly, approachable, and non-judgemental.
• A good listener who can gather information with patience and empathy.
• Confident with reading, writing, and basic maths
• Comfortable using IT for online research, case recording, and virtual learning.
• Aligned with our values on equality, diversity, and inclusion.

When & Where?

This role requires a more substantial and consistent commitment than some other volunteering opportunities.

You’ll need to allow time for initial training, ongoing learning, supervision and client appointments. We’ll explain the expected hours, arrangements and any attendance requirements before you apply.

We have offices in Stanley, Horden and Newton Aycliffe

Training and Support Offered/Expenses

You’ll receive role-appropriate training to develop the knowledge and skills needed to support clients. You’ll also receive guidance and supervision from the team to help you build confidence and work within the responsibilities of your role.

You won’t be expected to know everything from the outset. We want you to have the support you need to develop and provide appropriate advice safely and effectively.
