Join an exciting pilot set to transform the Christmas experience at Auckland Palace! As someone who enjoys cooking up projects with ingredients such as Raspberry Pi’s, Arduinos and silicon chips or chopping and changing circuits on breadboards, you’ll be helping us dish up some crackers innovation. You’ll help us serve interfaces that will bring this ambitious pilot to life, with the opportunity to expand your potential while audience testing your menus.
Working alongside a creative and supportive team, you’ll get hands-on with electronics and/or code, contributing to interactive features that will wow visitors and make the festive season truly memorable. This is a unique opportunity to combine creativity, problem-solving, and technical skills in a magical heritage setting
Whether you’re a seasoned tinkerer an electromechanical hacker or simply curious about how things work, you’ll join others to build ohm sweet ohms right here in Bishop Auckland. Your contribution will play a vital role in shaping a brand-new Christmas offer for the community.

Responsibilities

Cooking up recipes using Raspberry Pi’s, single board computers and chip based ingredients
Hashing up the tech of toys or exploring the hidden potential of consumer goods.
Catering with cameras, projectors and image acquisition/recognition.
Preparing wholesome Bytes that control mains operating interfaces such as fans, DMX lighting, motors etc through computer controlled relays
Bringing sauce code and Java to life using microcontrollers/RFID/QR/Barcodes
Hacking through electomechanics, pneumatics and ancient kit such as vintage telephones as part of the multimedia mix.

Skills & Qualities

This role may suit people age 18 plus, who have either retired from a career in electronics or electromechanical/ Auto engineering or those who enjoy exploring electronics and tinkering with electromechanical things a hobby
You will enjoy working collaboratively with others, sharing ideas and helping each other get the most out of the project while respecting each other’s differences. Volunteers will be expected to comply with a high degree of safety while using tools and equipment necessary to the role and safety training will be given.
You should be familiar with basic soldering skills, breadboard assembly, wiring, component recognition and health and safety issues particularly regarding electrical safety and dangers inherent from chemicals and soldering

When & Where?

• We propose to meet on Monday evenings between 1700 and 19.00 at the Artists’ Hub, No43 Marketplace

Training and Support Offered/Expenses

• Safety training will be offered both online and in person.
• You will be working alongside Richard Hartnell, a multi award-winning experiential designer. Richard has created many multisensory and digital experiences incorporating artistis and performers and is keen to work with technically savvy volunteers to share ideas and innovate new digitally driven fun interfaces for use in a ‘Crackers Experience’.
• The experience will be piloted in the Auckland Palace this Christmas. Your insights, expertise and technical skills will be invaluable to the success of the project.

• Induction, shadowing, and ongoing support will be provided by Richard and other members of the Artists’ Hub as we test interfaces with audience focus groups and staff of the Auckland project.

Other Information

Volunteers are issued with an annual pass to our visitor attractions within Bishop Auckland. Regrettably we can not reimburse travel expenses at this time.
