Rethink Mental Illness - Co Durham Advocacy Service

We provide advocacy support to people across the whole of County Durham who are affected by mental health issues, or have a learning disability autism or a physical disability.

County Durham Community
County Durham Advocacy Service provides independent individual advocacy support and representation to service users. This involves ascertaining service users' wishes, feelings, beliefs, and supporting them to have their voice heard. This service is free to access and independent of other services.

County Durham IMCA
County Durham Advocacy Service provides independent individual advocacy support for people facing certain decisions in their life where they are deemed to lack capacity to make certain decisions and have no one appropriate to consult with around these decisions. This involves ascertaining service users' wishes, feelings, beliefs, and values both verbally (for example, facing decision regarding serious medical treatment, change of accommodation decisions, during care review meetings or Adult Safeguarding) We will be independent of the person making the decision, provide support for the person who lacks capacity, representing the person within meetings and within a report in the person’s best interest, question and challenge any relevant decision that appears not to be in that person’s best interest. This service is free to access and independent of other services.

County Durham IMHA
County Durham Advocacy Service provides IMHA (Independent Mental Health Advocacy) for anyone one who lives in County Durham, is detained and the Mental Health Act 1983 and has the right to an advocate. This involves making sure those detained are aware of their rights, supporting them in getting their views across to their care team to ensure they are involved in any decisions being made about them, attending Ward Rounds and Tribunals and helping them access their medical notes. This service is free to access and independent of other services.

County Durham SMH
County Durham Advocacy Service provides Specialist Mental Health advocacy to adults with a registered GP in County Durham and/or using mental health and/or social care services in County Durham who feel disadvantaged as a result of their mental health difficulties. The advocacy deals directly with issues relating to mental health treatment and care and cannot include such areas as benefits and financial matters. This service is free to access and independent of other services.

• Monday to Friday 9.00am - 5.00pm.
