Redhills Durham Miners’ Hall isn’t just a beautiful historic building in the centre of Durham City – it’s a dynamic hub of collective activism, using living heritage to revitalise our North East coalfield communities - from the River Tyne in the north to the Tees Valley in the south.
Built in 1915 as the home of the Pitman’s Parliament, Redhills once stood at the heart of local democracy. Recently opened late 2025 after a full restoration, it’s renewing its purpose as a heritage and cultural venue and a central hub of community-led social change and economic democracy supporting local people, skills and creativity. Redhills is energising hope for the future – and we need Volunteer Activists to help make it happen.
As a Redhills volunteer, you help us by:
Activating living heritage – banners, bands, theatre, film, arts and shared stories.
Welcoming visitors - making Redhills an open, friendly space.
Supporting events - both in Redhills and across the coalfield areas.
Strengthening community power -bringing the proud legacy and values of our mining communities into the 21st century.
You don’t need specialist knowledge – just curiosity and a belief in collective action that can make a difference.
