As part of Lumiere 2025, we’re looking for enthusiastic volunteers 18+ to take part in a unique immersive artwork called Iron Horse Junction, created by artist Hannah Fox in partnership with Durham Academy that will feature as part of Lumiere at Locomotion Railway Museum in Shildon.
Set among the museum’s historic trains, Iron Horse Junction features a series of whimsical railway signal boxes that project light and shadow in a dynamic, atmospheric scene of sound and light. To bring this piece to life, we’re looking for enthusiastic volunteers to take on the role of railway engineers for the night—people who enjoy getting involved with interactive art and engaging audiences. We’re looking for volunteers for 1 - 2-hour slots, between the 13th to 15th November 2025.
You will be responsible for making the artwork come to life, by turning a handle that helps the artwork project different moving shapes of shadow and light. Additionally you will be interacting with the general public and talking about the artwork.
This is a fun and social opportunity, no previous experience is needed but you do need to be confident with communicating with the general public.
1 - 2 hour volunteering slots between 13 - 15th November at Locomotion in Shildon.
Travel expenses covered, tea, coffee and light refreshments provided.
This is a fantastic opportunity to gain confidence talking to the general public, and to meet new people.
Parking is available at Locomotion, which is a fully accessible venue.
