Durham Cathedral Museum is reopening!! Formally known as 'Open Treasure' the museum is reopening after a long period of closure during the pandemic. The museum houses a journey through the monastic history of the Cathedral, changing specialist exhibitions including loans from significant collections across the country, and the unique and priceless artefacts of St. Cuthbert himself.

We are looking for people who are enthusiastic about history and heritage as well as creating joy and inspiration. Join us and you will be joining an ancient community known as the Haliwerfolc - those associated with St. Cuthbert.

You will support our Visitor Experience staff in providing a well-informed and hospitable welcome to visitors, being visible and available throughout their visit to engage, inform and assist them. You will also support the smooth operation of the tours and exhibition spaces.

As a key part of the team you will be expected to play a proactive and dynamic role alongside fellow staff and volunteers to ensure that Durham Cathedral builds and maintains a reputation as one of the most welcoming and best loved attractions in the region and beyond.


• Ensure a consistent welcome as an ambassador for the Cathedral.
• Assist with the safe and efficient flow of people when entering, inside and leaving the spaces.
• Assist Visitor Experience Assistants with regular tours of the museum.
• Deal with visitor requests for assistance and information and proactively engage visitors when appropriate to add value to their understanding of the
• Assist with concerns from visitors efficiently and politely.
• Help to maintaining an overview of the security, safety and wellbeing of exhibition materials and visitors.
• Occasional light cleaning duties e.g. cleaning fingerprints from glass display cabinets, to maintain high standards of presentation.

Skills & Qualities

• A pleasant, polite, calm and welcoming manner.
• Respect and sensitivity towards other religions, beliefs, cultures and backgrounds. You do not have to be religious but just empathic to the organisation's
mission and ethos. We welcome those over 18 years of age, from all cultures, all religions or none!
• Discreet and observant of visitor behaviour.
• Ability to work in a team.
• Reliable and conscientious with good time keeping.
• Flexibility and adaptability.
• Tact and diplomacy.
• Willingness and ability to learn and use new information through instruction and relevant training courses. To build, maintain
and expand upon your knowledge of the exhibitions and be able to articulate this knowledge to visitors as appropriate.
• Interest in history, heritage and culture.

When & Where?

The Cathedral is open Monday – Sunday. There are two shifts per day each up to three hours in length:
• 10.00am-13.00pm and 13.00pm-16.00pm (Monday-Saturday)
• 10.30am-13.00pm and 13.00pm-15.30pm (Sunday).
Two shifts per month is encouraged in order to keep up to date but we can be flexible and are grateful for any donation of time which can fit around your needs. Times may change as the museum reopens after the pandemic.

Open Treasure museum and exhibition spaces which lie within the monastic buildings on the Cloister within the Cathedral site.

Training and Support Offered/Expenses

• Induction.

• Specific training relevant to the role.
• National Church of England Safeguarding training (mandatory): The Basic Awareness module (done once) and Foundation module (refreshed every three years) of this online safeguarding course must be completed before you start your volunteer role. They can be accessed at . This is a useful overview of safeguarding that can be used in other settings.

• Visitor Experience Assistants, Team Leaders and the Head of Visitor Experience.
• Volunteers Manager.

Durham Cathedral has been awarded the County Durham Kite Mark in volunteering (administered by Durham Community Action) which shows that it recognises the value of recruiting and retaining volunteers, works to overcome barriers to volunteering and is a place where volunteers receive a high quality, positive experience.

Recruitment is through an application form with references, informal interview, induction, shadowing and introductory period.

Uniform and appropriate identification is provided.

Due to severely limited space we are sorry but there is no parking available to volunteers in the Cathedral grounds unless agreed in advance.

Durham Cathedral takes the safeguarding and welfare of its staff, clergy, volunteers and visitors extremely seriously and will take immediate action in any circumstance where the safety and protection of children and vulnerable adults is at stake.
