Housing Support Volunteer CDFS

County Durham Young People’s Floating Support service - Supporting clients aged 16 to 25 to live independently we offer the following support:

Finding suitable accommodation, helping to complete forms, applying for relevant benefits, accessing grants/foodbanks, setting up utilities and maintaining a tenancy, accessing training/employment/education, support with legal issues/offending/safeguarding of adults and children, referring to specialist services for drug/alcohol mis-use/mental health issues, liaising with landlords re repairs/rent arrears/ASB, liaising with other agencies, budgeting finances to pay bills, accompany clients to medical appointments, assisting with benefit appeals, completing comprehensive needs and risk assessments and reviews of the support and risk management plans. Visits are mainly in the clients’ home on a 1 to 1 basis unless double cover (with another worker) is required for safety reasons.

Gypsy Roma and Traveller service - We provide housing related support and advice to Gypsies and Travelers to assist them to maintain a tenancy and live independently. Support includes everything covered in the CDFS description as well as:

Developing and promoting good working practices that will improve the accessibility of services for Gypsies and Travelers. Developing effective relationships with the GRT community and raising awareness of other services. Identifying barriers to using services and establishing working practices to overcome these. Engaging with the GRT community to assess their needs, access services and maintain involvement in order to increase their choices and raise their awareness to their rights and responsibilities.

Responsibilities

• Supporting the team with promotional work. This would include helping to visit
agencies in the area to distribute leaflets and posters.

• Making monthly phone calls to pre-tenancy clients who have been exited from
support. This will enable regular contact with this client group to ensure they are not
forgotten and can be given advice and assistance or be brought back onto support if
they have obtained a tenancy.

• Support the team to prepare a quarterly newsletter for our service users and
Stakeholders

• To accompany Support Co-ordinators with double cover visits. These will be
initial visits to clients to start their support plan and also visits which require 2 people
due to identified risks.

• To support the team with fundraising activities and E&D events. This will include
helping to set up events/activities and encouraging client involvement.

• To support the team with service user involvement and influence. This can
include; arranging clients to attend an interview panel when the service is recruiting
new staff, inviting service users to attend equality and diversity events, providing
feedback to the team of any suggestions made by clients for improving the service.

Skills & Qualities

Essential Criteria
Able to work as part of a team, on own initiative and to instruction
An understanding of Humankind – information is available on our website and you can call a
specific project to make enquires
Confident IT skills (the majority of our mandatory training is eLearning modules)
A genuine interest in being part of the mission and vision of Humankind
Ability to maintain professional boundaries, adhere to Humankind policies, engage in
supervision and complete relevant training
Able to manage a varied workload, prioritising tasks as required
Understanding of principles of confidentiality
Empathy with client issues
Honest and committed
Good time keeping
Good attention to detail
