The Environment Agency are recruiting new Flood Warden Volunteers..

Flood wardens are volunteers who engage with and support their local communities before, during and after flooding. In the event of a flood event, flood wardens are our ‘eyes and ears’ on the ground. They ensure that the Environment Agency’s Flood Warning messages reach the local community. They also do important work in helping us to prepare communities in advance of any flooding so that communities know who to contact and what to do in the event of a flood.

Responsibilities

Typical tasks may be to help to raise awareness of flooding, to help to develop flood plans, to report flooding issues and to encourage local people to register to the Environment Agency’s Flood Alert and Flood Warning Service.

In the event of a flood, flood wardens are a key point of contact in their local communities. They will receive Environment Agency flood alerts and warnings and will share key messages with their local communities.

Please note that you should never enter flood water or dangerous situations. You will receive clear guidance on your role and responsibilities.

Skills & Qualities

We are seeking community minded individuals who are excellent communicators and who have good knowledge of their local area. If this role interests you please get in touch.

When & Where?

Where: In your community

Some of the role will involve working from home for example responding to emails/telephone calls. You may also be out and about engaging with the local community and attending meetings.

When: you will be a key point of communication during a flood event. We will also work together to build community resilience in advance of flooding to ensure local communities are prepared. This is likely to involve attending meetings with local representatives.

You will receive clear guidance on the role of a flood warden once you have been appointed.
