SEAHAM, PETERLEE, CROOK, BOWBURN, BISHOP AUCKLAND, BRANDON, DURHAM CITY, CHESTER LE STREET, STANLEY, SPENNYMOOR, CONSETT

Your local Primary Care Networks are delivering a COVID-19 vaccination programme in local communities and need your help. We are looking for volunteers across County Durham to be at the forefront of the local fight against the virus – you could be part of it!

As we look to support the vaccination programme we are seeking to establish a bank of potential Volunteer Marshalls. You will help healthcare staff to ensure that patients are supported in accessing their vaccination and their immediate aftercare. This is an exciting opportunity to play your part in protecting the community and saving lives.

The main aim of the role will be to ensure patients are where they are supposed to be and are ready for their vaccine, as well as providing reassurance. The role will focus on patient welfare, taking direction from staff and to be responsible for flow management of patients within and outside Vaccination Centres and allocated car parks.

It is important to stress at this point that after a successful application process volunteers will be added to a volunteer bank and it is envisaged that they will notified as and when shifts become available at their local centre, which are expected to become busy once fully operational.

Responsibilities

There are 3 main roles a Volunteer Marshall may be asked to support with based on whether the role is to support at the entrance site or exit.

Main entrance
• Ask patients if they are here for their Covid vaccination.
• Check their appointment time (if they are very early and have come in car, ask them to wait in the car).
• Possibly take temperature.
• Support with patient flow into building/reception area.
• Assisting with social distancing measures.
• Providing support for those with mobility problems i.e., bringing a wheelchair.
• Establish if patients need extra assistance and that practice staff are aware.
• Explaining there is a one-way system and how this works (book in, clinic room for vaccine, 15 min observation period, exit via a different door).
• Some clinics may ask Volunteer Marshalls to take patient names to tell the receptionist who you will be based near.
• Possibly car park marshalling where/if required.

Corridor Marshalling

• Assisting patients with the correct direction in the building (depending on site) before and after their vaccination.

15-minute observation after the vaccination

• Check that the patient has been given "Credit Card size" card with vaccine information and date.
• Give the patient a leaflet with information regarding the vaccination.
• Most clinicians provide patients with "Post-it" notes confirming the time they can leave (15 mins after vaccination) – show patients where the clock is or check if they have a watch/phone with time.
• Confirm with the patient what time they can leave and assist patients who need support during this time.
• Wipe down chairs between each patient use.
• Inform the Clinician of any patient experiencing problems.
• Assist patients who needs support on exit.
• Any patients asking about their second jab, advise once practices have confirmation on this, they will be in touch.

Other Information

Please note you will be applying to be part of a bank of volunteers across 13 County Durham Sites. At this stage the demand for volunteers is unknown and likely to vary across vaccination centres and it will be helpful to us if you could be as flexible as possible in the hours, days that you can offer and also to be available at short notice.

Flexibility is required by volunteers as vaccine deliveries can arrive later or earlier than expected and volunteers may be required to stand down from planned activity and if possible also attend a session at very short notice
